Full pdf obtained for upload; WHEN WILL VINES STRANGLE GAPS?—We conclude that the effects of a vine in a forest will depend largely upon the interaction of the vine with the recruitment requirements of other species. Our results suggest that some vines may alter the spatiotemporal pattern of recruitment sites in a forest ecosystem following a natural disturbance, quickly creating more very shady spots and inhibiting not only the germination of early successional species but also the growth of stems from advanced regeneration. Long-term studies and more experimental work combined with appropriate models may help us understand why vines sometimes have a detrimental effect on forest regeneration.
